On October 17, 2026, Tamil Nadu's Health Minister K. G. Arunraj announced a significant initiative to study the effectiveness of the Qdenga dengue vaccine in Kadayanallur. This research aims to assess the vaccine developed by a Japanese company against the dengue virus prevalent in the area. The announcement was made during the inauguration of a field study focused on both the vaccine and various mosquito repellent methods designed to protect residents from mosquito bites.

Minister Arunraj emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, stating that dengue fever can lead to severe health consequences, including death. He noted that the state has been actively managing dengue outbreaks through measures such as eliminating mosquito larvae and providing timely treatment to affected individuals. The introduction of the Qdenga vaccine, which has received prequalification from the World Health Organization (WHO), marks a new phase in the state's public health strategy.

The vaccine, which requires two doses spaced three months apart, has been shown to provide between 80% and 90% protection against dengue fever, according to research findings shared by Arunraj. He highlighted that the vaccine has been approved in over 40 countries, including Indonesia and Thailand, and is part of Brazil's immunization schedule. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) granted approval for the vaccine in July, paving the way for its introduction in Tamil Nadu, starting with Kadayanallur.

Kadayanallur was specifically selected for this study due to its history of high dengue cases and associated fatalities. The minister explained that the region's previous experiences with the disease necessitated a focused approach to vaccination and prevention. Additionally, the study will explore the effectiveness of various mosquito repellents, including topical applications and electric vaporisers, in reducing mosquito bites.

The launch of this initiative is seen as a proactive step towards safeguarding public health in Tamil Nadu. Alongside the vaccine study, the minister also presented appointment orders to 30 nurses, further strengthening the healthcare workforce in the region. The event was attended by various officials, including Environment Minister V.K. Rajeev and Health Secretary Darez Ahamed, highlighting the collaborative effort in tackling dengue in the state.
