Revolutionary Smartphone Tool for Alzheimer’s Detection
A groundbreaking smartphone platform developed in India promises to enhance early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
JNCASR has created a smartphone tool for Alzheimer’s detection.
The technology uses a molecule that changes fluorescence to identify biomarkers.
This innovation aims to make diagnosis more affordable and accessible.
Researchers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bengaluru have unveiled a smartphone-enabled platform designed to detect amyloid-β (Aβ), a crucial biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease. This innovative technology aims to streamline early screening processes, making them faster, more affordable, and widely accessible to the public.
The platform, named ADxFluor, employs a fluorescence-responsive molecule known as TZ-48. When TZ-48 interacts with Aβ, it triggers changes in fluorescence that can be captured and quantified by a smartphone application. Laboratory studies have shown that TZ-48 can effectively identify Aβ in both blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid, distinguishing between Alzheimer’s-affected and healthy subjects. This advancement could significantly reduce reliance on costly diagnostic equipment, facilitating easier access to Alzheimer’s screening and disease staging at the point of care.
