In Peshawar, Lieutenant General (retd) Nigar Johar, a member of the Advisory Council for Health, has made a strong appeal to the public to adopt cleanliness as a daily practice to help prevent the spread of dengue fever. She highlighted the critical role that individual and community efforts play in maintaining clean environments, which are essential for controlling mosquito populations that breed dengue.
Johar pointed out that dengue is both preventable and treatable, emphasizing that public awareness and timely action are vital in mitigating its spread. She noted that while the Health Department's initiatives are important, they cannot succeed without the active participation of individuals and communities in their neighborhoods.
The health advisor outlined specific actions that citizens can take, such as ensuring that water does not accumulate in containers like flowerpots, old tyres, and water coolers. She advised keeping water tanks covered and regularly cleaning areas where water may collect. Furthermore, she encouraged proper waste disposal and collaboration with local authorities to keep streets and vacant lots clean.
For personal protection against mosquito bites, Johar recommended using mosquito nets, applying repellent lotions, and wearing long-sleeved clothing. She stressed that cleanliness campaigns should be a continuous effort rather than a one-off event, ensuring long-term protection against dengue.
Highlighting the symptoms of dengue, which include high fever, severe headaches, and body aches, Johar urged anyone experiencing these signs to seek medical attention promptly. She called on various community members, including students, teachers, and shopkeepers, to engage in collective cleanliness initiatives to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and reduce dengue transmission risks. Johar concluded by urging citizens to commit to preventing stagnant water and maintaining cleanliness in their neighborhoods.
