On World Polio Day, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reaffirmed India's commitment to maintaining its polio-free status, a recognition granted by the World Health Organization in 2014. In a social media announcement, he highlighted the importance of continued vigilance against the potential reintroduction of the poliovirus into the country.
Nadda pointed out that the government’s Universal Immunization Programme, along with supplementary vaccination initiatives, plays a crucial role in ensuring that children under the age of five receive the necessary doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine. These efforts are particularly focused on reaching remote and underserved communities, ensuring that no child is left unprotected.
The Minister emphasized that sustaining high immunization coverage is vital in the ongoing battle against polio. He also stressed the importance of robust disease surveillance systems to monitor and respond to any potential threats posed by the poliovirus, reinforcing the need for comprehensive protection for all children.
Nadda's statements come at a time when global health organizations continue to advocate for vigilance against polio, especially in regions where the disease remains endemic. His remarks serve as a reminder of the progress made in India and the need for sustained efforts to protect the health of future generations.
Looking ahead, the Health Ministry plans to enhance its immunization strategies and outreach programs to ensure that every child receives the necessary vaccinations. The government is committed to maintaining its polio-free status and will continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any resurgence of the disease.
