Gilead Sciences has announced a partnership with the mindfulness application Calm to provide tailored emotional wellness resources for individuals affected by chronic illnesses such as cancer, HIV, and liver conditions. This initiative marks a significant expansion of Gilead's commitment to supporting patients beyond their physical health needs by offering curated mental health and mindfulness content.

The collaboration comes in response to alarming statistics regarding mental health among chronic disease patients. Gilead and Calm report that over one-third of individuals living with HIV in the United States experience symptoms of depression, while 28% suffer from anxiety disorders. Additionally, many cancer patients report distress, with approximately 50% experiencing significant emotional challenges. Gilead has also emphasized the mental health struggles faced by those with liver conditions, such as primary biliary cholangitis, where symptoms like fatigue and brain fog can severely impact quality of life.

In anticipation of World Mental Health Day on October 10, the partnership will provide disease-specific content via the Calm app and online platforms. These resources will include meditation and soundscape sessions aimed at alleviating emotional distress, particularly for those with advanced cancer. The offerings will also be accessible to caregivers and others impacted by these health conditions, ensuring a broader reach of support.

Darius Kuras, Gilead’s Vice President of U.S. public affairs, highlighted the importance of addressing the holistic needs of patients. He stated that while medications for these conditions are essential, they often do not fully meet the mental health needs of patients. The collaboration aims to bridge this gap by utilizing Calm’s extensive reach to raise awareness about the mental health challenges associated with chronic diseases.

This partnership is set to last for two years, with the possibility of further expansion as Gilead continues to prioritize holistic health initiatives. Kuras noted that providing resources that extend beyond physical health has always been a key focus for Gilead. Calm, which has previously collaborated with Insulet to introduce mindfulness tools for diabetes patients, is now broadening its scope to include mental health resources for various chronic conditions, emphasizing the growing recognition of mental wellness in healthcare.
