The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently experiencing a significant Ebola outbreak, with confirmed cases nearing 10,000, as reported by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). This outbreak is noted as the most geographically widespread in history, prompting urgent calls for international assistance to prevent further transmission across the continent.

The outbreak was officially declared in May 2023, and since then, it has claimed more than 4,600 lives across eight of the DRC's 26 provinces. The situation has escalated, with new cases emerging in neighboring countries, including Nigeria and Kenya, highlighting the need for enhanced cross-border disease surveillance and response measures.

On October 20, Nigeria confirmed its first case of Ebola, linked to the Bundibugyo virus, the same strain responsible for the ongoing epidemic in the DRC. The patient, a woman who had traveled from Uganda, developed symptoms shortly after her return and is currently isolated in a hospital. Health authorities in Nigeria are monitoring 44 contacts related to her case. Meanwhile, Kenya reported its ninth confirmed case, all connected to an initial case involving a traveler from the DRC.

The DRC outbreak continues to pose severe public health risks, particularly in densely populated areas like Kinshasa. The eastern province of Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for a significant majority of cases. Former health minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani Mbanda has emphasized the importance of strengthening surveillance measures at various entry points to prevent the virus from reaching the capital, where the population density could exacerbate the crisis.

In response to the escalating situation, Africa CDC's Director-General Jean Kaseya has called for immediate international support, including medical supplies and trained personnel, to combat the outbreak effectively. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also urged regional countries to maintain high levels of preparedness to detect and control the spread of the virus. The current outbreak is the largest ever recorded in the DRC and poses a significant challenge to public health efforts across the region.
