CMS Introduces New Specialty Code for Physician Nutrition Specialists Effective October 2026
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has launched a new specialty code to recognize Physician Nutrition Specialists, enhancing their role in patient care.
The new Physician Nutrition Specialist code is effective from October 1, 2026.
This initiative aims to better identify physicians with advanced nutrition expertise within Medicare systems.
Certification for Physician Nutrition Specialists is available through the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists.
On October 5, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the implementation of a new specialty code for Physician Nutrition Specialists, designated as F7. This code will be effective for services rendered starting October 1, 2026, allowing for improved identification of physicians who possess advanced knowledge in clinical nutrition within the Medicare framework.
The establishment of this code was prompted by a request from the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists (NBPNS), supported by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). Dr. Michael M. Rothkopf, a board member of NBPNS, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that it marks a crucial step towards recognizing clinical nutrition as a specialized area of medical practice. Physician Nutrition Specialists collaborate with Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and other healthcare professionals to address patients' nutritional needs effectively.
The newly introduced specialty code will enhance the accuracy of identifying Physician Nutrition Specialists in Medicare enrollment and claims processing. However, it is important to note that this code does not establish a new Medicare benefit or guarantee payment for specific services. This change is part of ongoing efforts to enhance nutrition education within medical training, reflecting the increasing acknowledgment of nutrition's vital role in patient care and the necessity for physicians to integrate evidence-based nutrition practices into their work.
A Physician Nutrition Specialist is defined as a physician who has acquired advanced expertise in clinical nutrition alongside their primary medical specialty. These specialists are equipped to diagnose and manage primary nutritional diseases, utilize nutrition in treating complex nutrition-related conditions, and contribute to disease prevention efforts. They work collaboratively within interprofessional care teams to optimize patient outcomes.
The NBPNS offers voluntary certification for physicians who wish to demonstrate their proficiency in clinical nutrition. This certification process includes year-round testing and secure remote proctoring, providing physicians with flexible options to achieve certification. The NBPNS, which originated from the Intersociety Professional Nutrition Education Consortium founded in 1997, sets the standards for assessing and certifying physicians as Physician Nutrition Specialists. Achieving certification as a Diplomat of the NBPNS signifies a physician's high level of competency in evidence-based medical nutrition.
