On October 30, 2026, the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore and Ranipet commemorated World Stroke Day with a series of informative events aimed at raising awareness about stroke care.
The theme for this year's observance was 'Each Minute Counts, Be FAST, Recognise Stroke, Save Lives.' The event brought together various medical teams, including neurology, radiology, rehabilitation, emergency medicine, and nursing, to educate the public on the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms and the critical nature of timely medical intervention.
A significant highlight of the day was a complimentary Carotid Doppler screening camp organized by the Division of Clinical Radiology, which served approximately 500 individuals. Additionally, the event featured interactive stalls, multilingual talks, personal stories from stroke survivors, and a creative reel-making competition to engage attendees.
Discussions during the event emphasized the warning signs of a stroke, the necessity of immediate hospital visits within the treatment window, and the importance of emergency brain imaging and acute treatments, including clot-dissolving and retrieval therapies, as well as rehabilitation strategies for recovery.
Key figures at the event included Vinay Timothy Oommen, deputy director of CMC Vellore and head of the Department of Physiology, and Myla Yacob, deputy medical superintendent of CMC Vellore, who contributed to the discussions and activities. The event aimed not only to inform but also to empower the community regarding stroke awareness and prevention strategies.
