AI Saves Life of UK Doctor's Mother Facing Death
A UK doctor utilized AI to identify a critical vitamin deficiency in his mother, saving her from life-threatening seizures.
Edward Patrick's mother was near death due to severe seizures.
AI identified a vitamin B6 deficiency linked to her Parkinson’s medication.
Immediate treatment with vitamin B6 led to a rapid recovery.
In a remarkable turn of events, a doctor in the UK turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to save his mother, who was given only hours to live due to severe seizures. Edward Patrick, an anaesthetist from Oxfordshire, received an urgent call at 4 am in May, prompting him to rush to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Upon arrival, he learned that hospital staff were struggling to explain his mother's deteriorating condition.
The situation escalated when Edward's brother suggested that a vitamin deficiency might be the cause of their mother Ann Patrick's seizures. With this insight, Edward utilized an AI tool to analyze her symptoms, medical scans, and test results. The AI indicated a potential vitamin B6 deficiency, which is sometimes associated with long-term use of Parkinson’s medication, as the underlying issue behind her seizures.
After sharing the AI's findings with the medical team, they administered vitamin B6 intravenously, leading to an almost immediate cessation of the seizures. Edward described the experience as akin to a “House moment,” referencing the popular medical drama, emphasizing the surreal nature of the situation. He expressed disbelief at the rapid turnaround, noting that his mother had been on the brink of death.
Ann Patrick, who is in her late seventies, had developed rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition that can result from muscle breakdown and may lead to severe complications, including seizures. While such vitamin deficiencies are rare, they can occur with certain Parkinson’s treatments. Following her treatment, Ann has shown significant improvement and has not required further hospitalization.
Reflecting on her recovery, Ann expressed her amazement at how a seemingly minor deficiency could have such a profound impact on her life. She stated, “I just can’t get over that such a small thing can make such a large difference to whether you live or die.” This incident not only highlights the potential of AI in medical diagnostics but also underscores the importance of thorough investigation in critical health situations.
