Acharya Balkrishna recently took to Facebook to advocate for the daily consumption of aloe vera juice, citing its numerous health benefits. He claims that regular intake can bolster immunity, alleviate allergies, purify blood, and relieve joint pain, as well as assist with ulcers and acidity issues.
Aloe vera has been a staple in Indian households for generations, and its juice is derived from the gel found within its leaves. This gel is rich in water, vitamins, minerals, and plant sugars, particularly polysaccharides, which have been the focus of various scientific studies. Additionally, aloe vera contains compounds that may help reduce inflammation in the body, contributing to its reputation as a health booster.
Research indicates that aloe vera juice can provide significant relief from acidity and ulcers. A 2015 study conducted in Iran showed that participants suffering from acid reflux experienced a reduction in heartburn and regurgitation after consuming aloe vera syrup for four weeks. Similar positive outcomes were observed in trials involving patients with ulcerative colitis, who fared better when consuming aloe gel compared to those receiving a placebo.
While there is laboratory evidence suggesting that aloe polysaccharides can activate immune cells, most of the research has been conducted in controlled environments rather than in human trials. The evidence supporting aloe vera's effectiveness for allergies is limited, with some studies indicating potential benefits from aloe sprays, but not enough research has been done on the juice itself. Regarding joint pain, aloe's anti-inflammatory properties may offer some relief, although existing studies are small and inconclusive. The traditional notion of aloe vera as a blood cleanser lacks scientific backing, as the liver and kidneys primarily perform this function.
In addition to its potential benefits, aloe vera juice may also help lower blood sugar levels in individuals with prediabetes and diabetes, which could be advantageous for some consumers. However, it is essential to choose the right aloe vera juice, as not all products are created equal. The latex layer beneath the skin of the leaf contains aloin, a potent laxative that has been linked to health risks. A 2013 study by the US government found that whole leaf aloe extract could cause tumors in rats. Consequently, consumers are advised to select juices labeled as "decolorized" or "aloin-free" and to ensure that homemade juice is made from thoroughly washed clear gel.
