Kotak advocates for a medium-term investment strategy focused on quality and risk management.

Uday Kotak, the founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Asia's wealthiest banker, has indicated that India may benefit from increased foreign investment if the global artificial intelligence (AI) investment boom begins to reverse. Speaking in a virtual address prior to the Diwali festival, Kotak emphasized that the overvaluation of many global companies pursuing AI initiatives could lead investors to seek more attractive market valuations elsewhere, particularly in India.

The Indian stock market has seen a nearly 10% recovery from its lows earlier this month, coinciding with a downturn in global AI-related stocks. In contrast, tech-heavy markets across Asia have experienced declines exceeding 7% during the same timeframe, underscoring India's relative stability amidst global market fluctuations. However, despite this rebound, Indian stocks remain among the poorer performers in the region, with significant foreign investor withdrawals totaling $29 billion in 2026 due to high valuations and rising energy costs.

Kotak, whose net worth is estimated at $16.5 billion, noted that Indian equities have maintained their strength despite geopolitical tensions and volatile global markets. He pointed out that domestic investors continue to show confidence in the market, which has improved its relative valuation position following recent corrections, making stocks more appealing compared to their counterparts six to twelve months ago.

The Nifty 50 Index, a key benchmark for Indian equities, is currently trading at 17.5 times its estimated earnings for the next twelve months, down from 21 times at the beginning of the year. This still represents a significant premium compared to the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, which trades at approximately 10 times. Kotak believes that India's robust growth potential remains a critical advantage in attracting investors.

Looking ahead, Kotak advises investors to adopt a medium-term perspective, emphasizing the importance of focusing on quality companies and effective risk management strategies rather than making impulsive short-term investment decisions.
