At the Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2026 held in New Delhi, N Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, underscored the necessity of adopting a long-term perspective in the semiconductor industry. He argued that the significance of chips extends beyond immediate financial targets, emphasizing that their essential role in the economy will persist regardless of short-term outcomes.
Chandrasekaran drew parallels to the vision of Tata Group's founder, Jamsetji Tata, who recognized the importance of steel and power even before their realization. He noted that while immediate results may not be evident, the strategic decisions made today will shape the future of India's technological landscape. He stated, "Directionally, if you design it on the belief that it is needed for India, it is needed for mankind and for enterprises, you will get it right."
The Tata Group has been cautious in its investments, adhering to financial discipline while pursuing global partnerships to access necessary technologies. Chandrasekaran emphasized that reckless investments are not an option, stating, "You can't be reckless" and highlighted the importance of aligning ambition with sound financial practices. He pointed out that while the demand for advanced chips exists, Tata must remain responsive to market needs and technological advancements.
Chandrasekaran also addressed the broader implications of geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions on the semiconductor industry. He noted that despite these challenges, the Tata Group is poised for growth, aiming for double-digit increases in performance while maintaining robust margins. He expressed concern over the misuse of technology and the potential for labor restructuring in the face of rapid advancements.
Looking ahead, Chandrasekaran acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the pace of technological adoption and the specific innovations to pursue. He reaffirmed the Tata Group's commitment to navigating these complexities while contributing to India's growth in the semiconductor sector, which is increasingly vital for national and global economic stability.
