In September 2026, India's sub-4m SUV segment experienced a significant surge in sales, reaching a total of 127,613 units, which marks an 18.3% increase compared to the same month last year. Tata Motors emerged as a dominant force in this market, with its models, the Nexon and Punch, leading the sales figures. The competitive landscape is intensifying, with strong performances from other manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, which saw notable growth in its Fronx and Brezza models.
The Tata Nexon maintained its leadership position with sales of 20,456 units, although this represents a decline of 9.4% from the previous year's 22,573 units. Despite this drop, the Nexon accounted for 16.0% of the segment's total sales, underscoring its significance in the compact SUV market. Meanwhile, the Tata Punch recorded a remarkable 28.0% year-on-year increase, selling 20,333 units and closing the gap with the Nexon to just 123 units.
Maruti Suzuki's Fronx emerged as a key player, securing third place with 19,282 units sold, reflecting a substantial 40.1% growth from 13,767 units in September 2025. The Brezza also showcased impressive performance, achieving a 54.2% increase in sales, totaling 15,685 units. Together, these models contributed significantly to Maruti Suzuki's overall performance in the sub-4m SUV segment.
The Hyundai Venue remained stable with 11,466 units sold, while the Hyundai Exter surged by 47.9% to 8,344 units. Mahindra's XUV 3XO crossed the 10,000-unit mark, recording 10,823 sales, indicating sustained demand in the competitive compact SUV market. In contrast, models like the Skoda Kylaq and Nissan Magnite experienced declines in sales, highlighting the challenges faced by smaller players in this segment.
Looking ahead, the sub-4m SUV market is expected to remain highly competitive, with Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki leading the charge.
