Tata Communications has announced a significant investment of up to $450 million to develop an 'AI Super Highway' aimed at enhancing connectivity between India's key data centers and artificial intelligence hubs. Rupesh Chokshi, the executive vice president and global business head for network services, highlighted that this ambitious project will span approximately 10,000 kilometers of AI-ready fiber network, with aspirations to capture a market share of 30-40% in the data center connectivity sector.

The company anticipates that the market for data center-to-data center connectivity in India could surpass $1 billion in the medium term, driven by increasing investments in AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure. Chokshi emphasized that the investment will focus on long-haul and metro terrestrial fiber connections, prioritizing routes based on projected traffic and capacity needs. The initiative will also incorporate subsea connectivity to enhance its international network capabilities.

The first phase of the AI Super Highway will establish connections between major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, which are pivotal for data center and hyperscale infrastructure. Subsequent phases will extend the network to Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, and Gujarat, facilitating a robust interconnectivity framework to support bandwidth-intensive AI workloads. The network is designed to provide 7.2 petabytes of capacity, catering to the growing demands for higher data transfer rates and reliability.

As India continues to expand its AI computing capabilities, the need for efficient connectivity becomes increasingly critical. Chokshi noted that if the necessary infrastructure is not developed, connectivity could become a bottleneck for AI expansion, similar to existing challenges related to power and cooling. The network will not only connect domestic data centers but will also link to international cable landing stations, enabling seamless data movement between India and global AI hubs.

Looking ahead, Tata Communications is actively engaging with multiple customers to finalize contracts for the AI Super Highway. The company has a proven track record, having previously built a dedicated network for Amazon Web Services. With over 500,000 kilometers of subsea optical fiber and more than 200,000 kilometers of terrestrial fiber already in operation, Tata Communications is well-positioned to support the growing AI infrastructure needs in India and beyond.
