On October 21, the Indian stock market witnessed a notable decline as benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty fell sharply from their day's highs. By 11:29 AM, the Sensex was recorded at 73,947.29, reflecting a modest increase of 94.39 points or 0.13%, while Nifty was slightly up by 4.2 points at 22,893.15. However, the overall market sentiment was dampened with 885 shares advancing against 2,863 shares declining, and 181 remaining unchanged.
The primary factor contributing to this market downturn was profit booking at elevated levels. As investors sought to secure gains, the Sensex dropped 600 points from its peak, leading to Nifty trading below the crucial 22,950 threshold. This trend indicates a cautious approach among investors, reflecting uncertainty in the market.
Another significant reason for the decline was the rise in crude oil prices, with Brent crude futures exceeding $110 per barrel. The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz have heightened market anxiety. V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that sustained high oil prices could exert pressure on the market, impacting India's import bill and corporate profitability due to the country's reliance on imported oil.
From a technical perspective, analysts pointed out that Nifty is facing strong resistance at the 23,100 level. For any bullish momentum to return, it must decisively surpass this mark. The immediate support level for Nifty is around 22,800, while a failure to reclaim Monday's high of 23,175 could result in a corrective consolidation between 23,175 and 22,500. Shrikant Chouhan from Kotak Neo highlighted that day traders should monitor the 22,800-22,750 range as key trend zones.
Looking ahead, market participants are advised to remain vigilant as the indices navigate through these fluctuations. Upcoming trading sessions will be crucial in determining whether the market can regain its footing or if further declines are imminent. Investors are encouraged to keep an eye on global oil prices and geopolitical developments that could influence market dynamics.
