On October 14, the Indian stock market experienced a notable decline, with the Sensex dropping 402.85 points to close at 72,630.93. The Nifty index also fell by 149.20 points, settling at 22,572.75. This downturn followed a period of gains, leading to profit booking by investors and continued selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs).

The market's decline was primarily attributed to profit booking after a 1.6% increase in the previous session. The Sensex fell significantly from its day's high, while the Nifty slipped below the crucial psychological level of 22,600. Analysts noted that the market's technical indicators suggested a need for the Nifty to trade above 22,750 to encourage further buying.

Key financial stocks contributed to the downward pressure, with ICICI Bank and Shriram Finance both experiencing nearly 1% losses. Despite some gains in Infosys and Reliance Industries, the overall financial sector, particularly non-banking finance companies, faced challenges. Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. was among the top losers, dropping nearly 3%.

The impact of foreign institutional selling was significant, with net sales reaching approximately Rs 1,305 crore over 13 sessions. However, the pace of these outflows has moderated, partly due to recent measures by the Reserve Bank of India aimed at stabilizing the currency market. The rupee appreciated by 1.5% in the last two trading days, which helped alleviate some selling pressure.

Looking ahead, analysts suggest that the market's ability to maintain recent gains will depend on its capacity to absorb supply at higher levels. The near-term outlook remains cautiously optimistic but is susceptible to volatility, particularly with ongoing FII selling and rising oil prices, which have reached about $107 per barrel. The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, also increased by over 2%, indicating heightened uncertainty in the market.
