Indian stock markets surged on Wednesday, driven by optimism over a potential India-US trade agreement and the launch of Jio Platforms' IPO.
Sensex rose by 829 points to reach 74,682.19
Jio Platforms' IPO opened, aiming to raise over ₹30,000 crore
IT sector led gains, with Infosys and TCS among top performers
On Wednesday, Indian stock market benchmarks experienced a significant rise, with the BSE Sensex gaining 829 points, or 1.1%, to reach an intraday high of 74,682.19. The Nifty 50 also saw a notable increase, climbing 232 points, or 1%, to settle at 23,120.90. This upward movement was largely attributed to growing optimism surrounding a potential trade agreement between India and the United States, alongside the much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms.
The market opened positively, with the Sensex starting at 74,337.93, compared to its previous close of 73,852.90. The Nifty 50 began trading at 23,016, up from its last close of 22,888.95. Investors were particularly focused on the Jio Platforms IPO, which commenced subscription on Wednesday and is expected to close on October 23. This IPO aims to raise over ₹30,000 crore, potentially making it the largest in India by issue size, surpassing Hyundai Motor India's previous record.
Sector performance was predominantly favorable, led by the information technology sector, which saw the Nifty IT index rise by 2.03%. Notable gainers included Infosys, which increased by 2.47%, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which rose by 2.08%. However, Bajaj Finance emerged as the biggest laggard, falling by 2.32%. Market analysts noted that while the surge in stock prices was encouraging, concerns over rising crude oil prices and elevated US bond yields could pose challenges for sustained growth.
The positive sentiment in the Indian markets was further bolstered by developments in Asian equities, where technology stocks gained traction following strong earnings reports from companies benefiting from the artificial intelligence sector. The Kospi in South Korea surged by 3.7%, and Taiwan's Taiex rose by 1.4%. This regional rally contributed to a 1.1% increase in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, breaking a two-session losing streak.
Looking ahead, market experts suggest that while the current momentum is promising, external factors such as high crude prices and foreign investor outflows could impact future performance. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, emphasized that the market's trajectory will depend on stock-specific movements and upcoming earnings reports, indicating a cautious but optimistic outlook for investors in the near term.
