A 35-year-old engineer from Saudi Arabia faces charges for allegedly installing a surveillance device in OpenAI's conference room.
Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested after a listening device was found at OpenAI.
He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The incident raises concerns about security in the competitive AI industry.
A Saudi engineer employed by OpenAI has been arrested following the discovery of a concealed listening device in the company's conference room. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was taken into custody after U.S. authorities reported the incident, which occurred in late September 2026. The Department of Justice has indicated that Alfozan had been with OpenAI since July 2025.
The allegations against Alfozan include using the listening device to unlawfully gather sensitive information. He made his initial court appearance on Tuesday, where he was informed of the serious nature of the charges he faces, which could lead to a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a hefty fine of $250,000.
According to the Justice Department's complaint, the device was cleverly hidden in toilet paper and was installed around September 28, with its discovery occurring two days later. Surveillance footage from OpenAI's offices reportedly captured Alfozan near the executive conference room on several occasions prior to the device's discovery, despite him lacking the authority to access the area or participate in the meetings held there, which were described as highly confidential.
The implications of this incident extend beyond OpenAI, as it highlights the increasing concerns regarding surveillance and espionage within the rapidly evolving AI sector. The FBI has emphasized the importance of protecting American innovation in artificial intelligence, viewing such incidents as critical to national security. OpenAI has stated that they utilized their own AI models to identify Alfozan as the individual responsible for planting the device and have cooperated fully with the FBI's ongoing investigation.
Looking ahead, the legal proceedings against Alfozan will continue, with the FBI's investigation still active. OpenAI has confirmed that they have terminated Alfozan's employment and are committed to ensuring the security of their operations. The case underscores the need for vigilance in safeguarding sensitive information in an industry where competitive advantages are fiercely sought after.
