On October 28, retail investors borrowed a staggering ₹2,227 crore through the margin trading facility (MTF) to acquire shares of Jio Platforms on its first day of trading. This significant borrowing places Jio Platforms among the top five stocks with the highest broker funding on that date, indicating a robust demand from individual investors eager to participate in the company's market debut.

The borrowing was predominantly concentrated on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), where ₹2,182 crore was raised, while the remaining amount was sourced from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Notably, the MTF book on the NSE surged by ₹2,337 crore on the same day, with an impressive 93% of this increase attributed to purchases of Jio Platforms shares, as per exchange data. The stock made its debut at a 27% premium over its issue price of ₹1,119, further fueling investor enthusiasm.

HDFC Bank emerged as the most financed stock on October 28, with broker funding reaching ₹3,073 crore on the NSE. Following closely were Reliance Industries and BSE Ltd, with broker financing of ₹2,876 crore and ₹2,433 crore, respectively. Jio Platforms ranked fourth, attracting ₹2,182 crore in funding on its debut, showcasing the competitive landscape of broker financing on that day.

The NSE holds a dominant position in the MTF market, having classified Jio Platforms as a Group 1 security on its listing day, which is reserved for highly liquid stocks. Shai Coelho, founder of Vtrender, noted that MTF-funded buying of ₹2,000 crore is significant, given that the average daily cash market turnover is around ₹60,000 crore, representing approximately 3-4% of the market's daily activity. This level of investment reflects a strong bullish sentiment among retail investors, particularly in a market characterized by limited bullish opportunities.

Despite closing at ₹1,417 on October 28, marking a 26.81% gain from its issue price, Jio Platforms' stock experienced a slight dip of 2.5% the following trading day, dropping to ₹1,381. This fluctuation suggests some investors may have sold shares to secure profits. However, the stock rebounded, closing at ₹1,421.6. The MTF mechanism allows investors to purchase stocks by paying a fraction of the total value, with brokers covering the rest, which can lead to additional margin pressures if stock prices decline significantly, as highlighted by Coelho.
