Indian government asserts a fair licensing process for all satellite service providers.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has publicly responded to comments made by Elon Musk regarding the Indian market and his satellite service, Starlink. In a statement released on October 16, 2026, RIL clarified its position, asserting that it embraces competition and operates under a framework that promotes investment and innovation in India.
The company highlighted its journey since entering the telecom sector in 2016, when Jio Platforms Ltd. launched with no customers. Over the past decade, Jio has garnered the trust of over 530 million users, providing affordable data and robust digital infrastructure. RIL emphasized that it has never shied away from competition, viewing it as essential to delivering the best services to customers.
Musk's recent remarks on social media suggested that oligarchs were obstructing Starlink's entry into India, claiming this was detrimental to the Indian populace. He questioned whether Mukesh Ambani was the dominant force in the Indian market, citing Starlink's licensing in numerous countries and its prolonged compliance efforts in India without receiving a final license.
In response, the Indian government reiterated that its licensing framework is fair and non-discriminatory. It confirmed that both Starlink and other satellite service providers, including Jio Satellite and Eutelsat OneWeb, are awaiting final security clearances and spectrum allocations. The government dismissed Musk's allegations as unfounded, reinforcing that all applicants are treated equally under the law.
Looking ahead, the landscape for satellite communications in India remains competitive. With multiple players vying for market entry, the focus will be on regulatory developments and the eventual granting of licenses. Reliance is poised to continue its expansion in this sector, while Musk's Starlink will need to navigate the existing regulatory environment to establish its presence in the Indian market.
