Axis Bank has announced the appointment of Rahul Shukla as the group head of Commercial and Bharat Banking, effective October 19. This strategic move aims to bolster the bank's efforts in catering to small businesses and expanding its reach in rural and semi-urban markets. Shukla, a seasoned banker with extensive experience, will play a crucial role in enhancing customer relationships and driving growth within these sectors.
Shukla's return to a leadership position follows his departure from HDFC Bank in October 2025, where he served as the group head of Commercial and Rural Banking. His resignation was attributed to personal reasons, marking a brief hiatus from active banking leadership. With over three decades of experience in various banking domains, including wholesale and rural banking, Shukla is well-equipped to lead Axis Bank's initiatives in these critical areas.
Having joined HDFC Bank in 2018 after a long tenure at Citibank, Shukla has a proven track record in corporate banking. At HDFC, he was instrumental in driving growth in the bank's Commercial and Rural Banking segments, which became vital for the lender's expansion into micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and agricultural financing. His previous roles at Citibank included overseeing corporate banking operations across South Asia, showcasing his capability in managing large corporate relationships and financial institutions.
Axis Bank's focus on Bharat Banking aligns with its strategic goal of enhancing its footprint in rural and semi-urban markets. This segment encompasses various services, including farmer finance, gold loans, and microfinance, aimed at addressing the unique needs of these communities. The bank plans to adopt an asset-led liability strategy to deepen its market presence and build a profitable Bharat Banking franchise, which is seen as a priority for its future growth.
Looking ahead, Shukla's leadership is expected to drive Axis Bank's ambitions in the Bharat market, leveraging digital platforms and strategic partnerships to scale operations. As the bank seeks to increase its market share in these underserved regions, Shukla's expertise will be pivotal in navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
