Q2FY27 Banking Performance: Yes Bank Leads in Profit Growth
In the latest quarterly results, Yes Bank outperformed its peers with a 65% increase in net profit, while IDBI Bank faced a significant decline.
Yes Bank reported a 65% rise in net profit for Q2FY27.
HDFC Bank's profit growth was modest at 4.7%, impacted by lower treasury gains.
IDBI Bank's net profit fell by 39% due to a high base effect from last year.
In the second quarter of the financial year 2026-27, several major banks released their earnings, with Yes Bank standing out by achieving a remarkable 65% increase in net profit. This announcement came on October 17, 2023, as investors closely monitored the performance of HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and IDBI Bank alongside Yes Bank.
The results revealed a mixed bag of performances among the banks. While Yes Bank's significant profit growth was noteworthy, HDFC Bank's profit increased only modestly by 4.7%, primarily due to a sharp decline in treasury trading gains, which fell from ₹2,390 crore to ₹780 crore year-on-year. In contrast, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank posted strong results, with ICICI Bank achieving a 20.1% increase in net profit and Axis Bank reporting a 38% rise.
ICICI Bank's robust performance was attributed to strong loan growth and lower provisions for bad loans, leading to a net profit of ₹14,843 crore. Its net interest income (NII) also rose by 17.7% to ₹25,339 crore. Axis Bank's impressive profit of ₹7,003 crore was driven by a reduction in provisions and enhanced asset quality, with provisions decreasing from ₹3,547 crore to ₹1,694 crore compared to the previous year.
On the other hand, IDBI Bank faced challenges, reporting a 39% decline in net profit to ₹2,205 crore, largely due to a one-time gain from the previous year. Despite this, IDBI Bank's underlying performance improved, with a 14% increase in interest income and the lowest net NPA ratio among its peers at 0.17%.
Looking ahead, the banking sector's performance in the upcoming quarters will be closely watched, particularly as banks navigate interest rate changes and economic conditions. Investors will be keen to see if Yes Bank can maintain its upward trajectory and how HDFC Bank will respond to its recent challenges in treasury operations.
