At the India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for a concerted global effort to combat cyber fraud and deepfakes, emphasizing that mobile phones have evolved from mere communication tools to vital instruments of governance. He pointed out that the rapid adoption of technology has transformed the digital landscape, necessitating robust security measures to protect users.
In his address, PM Modi noted that his government has successfully utilized technology for direct benefit transfers amounting to Rs 50 lakh crore, which has significantly reduced financial leakages by nearly Rs 5 lakh crore. He acknowledged the challenges faced by those whose incomes have been affected, stating, "Those whose easy earnings have stopped, will they love Modi?" This remark came amid increasing scrutiny from opposition parties regarding the government's policies.
Reflecting on the progress made since the launch of 5G technology from the same platform in 2022, Modi contrasted the current scenario with a decade ago when the digital divide posed significant challenges. He stated that the ongoing telecom revolution is enhancing service delivery and expanding access to content, including in regional languages, while also presenting new challenges that must be addressed.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of strengthening the security framework associated with telecom and digital technologies. He called on governments, technology firms, telecom operators, and financial institutions to collaborate in creating a global mechanism to preemptively combat fraud. Modi expressed India's readiness to share its experiences and insights gained from its own challenges in the digital domain.
Looking ahead, PM Modi highlighted that the telecom boom in India has been facilitated by a strategic policy framework aimed at untangling the sector and alleviating financial burdens such as Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) liabilities. He urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the evolving landscape of cyber threats as technology continues to advance.
