Global factors like crude prices and US-Iran tensions pose risks to market sentiment.
The Nifty 50 index experienced a significant decline on Monday, losing 257 points to settle at 22,888, effectively ending its two-day winning streak. This downturn has sparked concerns regarding the sustainability of the recent buying momentum, particularly in light of ongoing global uncertainties and rising crude oil prices.
Market analysts noted that the trading day began with a muted opening, but selling pressure intensified as the session progressed. Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Neo, indicated that the formation of a long bearish candle on daily charts suggests a temporary weakness in the index following a strong uptrend.
To regain bullish momentum, the Nifty must reclaim the 23,000 mark, with resistance levels at 23,200-23,300 being critical for a sustained breakout. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, emphasized that failing to maintain levels above 22,800 could lead to renewed selling pressure, further complicating recovery efforts.
In addition to technical indicators, external factors are likely to influence domestic market trends. The rise in crude oil prices, coupled with uncertainties surrounding the US-Iran conflict and elevated US bond yields, are significant risks that could sway investor sentiment. Ankur Punj, managing director at Equirus Wealth, warned that these conditions may lead investors to seek safer assets, potentially offloading equities.
The Bank Nifty also closed lower, slipping below the 55,500 threshold, which raises concerns about its recovery potential. Analysts are closely monitoring the 55,800 level, as a sustained move above this point could reignite buying interest and pave the way for a test of the 56,000-56,100 resistance zone. Conversely, if it fails to hold above 55,400, further selling could push the index down to the next support levels of 55,200-55,000.
