Nifty Faces Crucial Test at 22,180 Amid Market Anxiety
Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities highlights the critical support level for Nifty as midcap and smallcap stocks face significant selling pressure.
Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices fell nearly 6% and over 7% respectively last week.
The 22,180 level is identified as a crucial support zone for Nifty, with potential further declines if breached.
Sudeep Shah recommends Kross and Bharti Hexacom as key stocks to watch for the upcoming week.
In a week marked by significant selling pressure, the Nifty index is facing a critical test at the 22,180 support level, according to Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices experienced declines of nearly 6% and over 7%, respectively, raising concerns among investors about a potential capitulation phase. However, Shah suggests that the current market dynamics indicate an acceleration of the corrective trend rather than a definitive washout.
Historically, capitulation is characterized by panic selling followed by stabilization in market momentum. Despite the recent sharp corrections in midcap and smallcap stocks, Shah notes that there are no clear signals indicating that the market has reached a capitulation phase. The Nifty index has shown relatively better resilience compared to its midcap and smallcap counterparts, although it failed to maintain levels above the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement near 23,200, leading to renewed selling pressure.
Shah emphasizes the importance of the 22,180 level, stating that a decisive breach below this point could trigger further declines towards the 22,000-21,850 range. Conversely, for a meaningful recovery, Nifty needs to reclaim and sustain levels above 22,600-22,700. The technical indicators suggest that the short-term trend remains weak, with the daily RSI drifting lower and approaching the critical 40 mark, indicating fading momentum.
The broader market's behavior warrants close attention, as the sharp declines in midcap and smallcap indices reflect a risk-off sentiment among investors. If this weakness continues, it could adversely affect the benchmark index as well. Shah recommends Kross and Bharti Hexacom as stocks to watch, citing their positive technical setups despite the overall market weakness. Kross is noted for its higher high-higher low formation, while Bharti Hexacom continues to trade above key moving averages.
Looking ahead, the market's direction will depend on whether Nifty can defend the 22,180 level in the coming week. Investors are advised to monitor the situation closely, as further declines could lead to a more significant downturn, while a recovery above the critical resistance levels could signal a shift in momentum.
