Nifty Closes at 22,600 Amid Fourth Day of Market Decline
Indian equity markets faced a fourth consecutive day of losses, with the Nifty index recovering slightly to close at 22,600.
Nifty index fell to an intraday low of 22,372 before recovering to 22,600.
The broader market indices, including Nifty Midcap and Smallcap, saw significant declines of 2.5% and 2.9%, respectively.
Brent crude prices nearing $115 per barrel are raising concerns over inflation and market stability.
On Friday, October 23, the Indian equity markets continued their downward trend for the fourth consecutive session, with the Nifty index recovering to close at 22,600 after dipping below 22,400 earlier in the day. The market opened positively but quickly turned negative, reflecting persistent selling pressure across various sectors.
The decline in the markets can be attributed to several factors, including sustained foreign fund outflows and rising crude oil prices, which have negatively impacted investor sentiment. The Sensex ended the day down 125.56 points, or 0.17%, at 73,123.83, while the Nifty50 index closed down 87.65 points, or 0.39%, recovering from a low of 22,372.
For the week, both the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 snapped their two-week winning streaks, declining by 2% and 2.35%, respectively. The broader market indices underperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index experiencing a nearly 6% drop, marking its worst weekly performance since October 2024. Similarly, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index fell over 7%, the steepest decline since February 2025.
The impact of these market movements is significant, as over 700 stocks reached their 52-week lows, indicating widespread investor caution. Notable losers included Shriram Finance, Tata Motors, and Adani Enterprises, while the IT sector showed some resilience amidst the broader downturn. The Indian rupee also weakened, closing at 94.94 per US dollar, further complicating the market landscape.
Looking ahead, analysts suggest that the Nifty is approaching a critical support zone between 22,200 and 22,400. A decisive break below this range could lead to further declines, while a recovery above 22,900 may signal a potential rebound. Investors are advised to maintain a cautious approach, focusing on disciplined risk management as market volatility continues to pose challenges.
