The Nifty 50 index is poised to complete a significant milestone, marking 160 trading sessions below its 200-day moving average (200-DMA) as of Friday. This period represents the longest technical correction since January 2012, indicating a notable trend in market performance. The index has been under this threshold since February 27, 2026, reflecting ongoing challenges in the financial landscape.

Historically, the Nifty has experienced similar prolonged corrections, but the current situation is unique due to the relatively shallow nature of the decline. Currently, the index is trading approximately 6% below its 200-DMA, which is set at 24,136. Analysts attribute this shallow correction to various factors, including geopolitical conflicts in West Asia, foreign institutional investors withdrawing from Indian equities, and rising crude oil prices, which have collectively influenced market dynamics.

Data shows that the Nifty has only recorded three trading sessions with a deficit exceeding 10% relative to its 200-DMA during this correction phase. In contrast, previous corrections saw the index remaining significantly below its long-term average for extended periods. For instance, during the global financial crisis from May 2008 to April 2009, the Nifty spent 227 sessions below its 200-DMA, with more severe drops than currently observed.

The implications of this ongoing correction extend beyond mere numbers, affecting investor sentiment and market strategies. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that external pressures, such as high crude prices and US bond yields, have emboldened bearish market positions. This has resulted in a market decline even amidst positive buying from foreign and domestic institutional investors.

Looking ahead, market analysts remain cautious about the Nifty's trajectory. Technical indicators suggest that the index must maintain support above the 22,800 level to avoid further declines. If it fails to hold this position, selling pressure could increase, potentially driving the index towards lower support levels around 22,600 to 22,500. The market's future direction will largely depend on its ability to navigate these challenges effectively.
