With a nearly 2% drop last week, the Nifty 50's performance raises concerns as it approaches key support levels.
Nifty 50 fell nearly 2.36% last week, nearing critical support at 22,300.
Infosys and Kotak Mahindra Bank report significant earnings, impacting stock focus.
Market sentiment remains bearish, with potential for further declines if key levels are breached.
The Nifty 50 index experienced a significant decline of approximately 2.36% last week, closing at 22,600 points on Friday. This downturn has raised alarms among investors, as it marks a halt in the index's previous two-week winning streak. The ongoing geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in Brent crude oil prices have contributed to this volatility, pushing the year-to-date losses for the index to around 13.56%, which could lead to its worst annual performance in over a decade.
As the market prepares for the upcoming week, analysts are closely monitoring whether bullish trends will re-emerge on Dalal Street or if bearish sentiments will prevail. Dr. Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services Ltd., noted that the technical structure remains weak, with selling pressure evident across most sectors, except for IT. He highlighted that immediate support is positioned near 22,300, and a decisive drop below this level could trigger further selling, potentially pushing the index down to the psychological support level of 22,000.
In terms of market dynamics, the Nifty 50 has formed a bearish candle pattern, indicating a continuation of the corrective decline for the fourth consecutive session. Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President-Research at Bajaj Broking, pointed out that the index has retraced 80% of its previous six sessions' upward movement. He indicated that if the index holds above last week's low of 22,372, it may consolidate within the range of 22,370 to 22,850. However, a breach below this level could open the door to further declines.
Several stocks are expected to be in the spotlight on Monday, October 26. Infosys, which recently reported a net profit of ₹7,823 crore for Q2FY27, is likely to attract attention following its earnings announcement. Similarly, Kotak Mahindra Bank's 26% increase in consolidated net profit for the September quarter to ₹5,645 crore will keep its stock in focus. Reliance Industries Limited is also expected to generate interest due to ongoing discussions surrounding the Jio Platforms IPO, which saw a strong subscription rate.
Looking ahead, the market's direction will hinge on key support levels and the performance of major stocks. Investors will be keenly watching the developments on October 26, particularly the results from Ather Energy, Tata Consumer Products, and others, as these could significantly influence market sentiment and trading strategies in the coming days.
