At the NDTV Profit Ignite 2026 event, leading market experts gathered to discuss the current state and future potential of Indian equities. Despite a prevailing sense of caution among investors, the consensus was that the most severe market corrections might be behind us, although a full recovery could take time.

Historically, Indian equities have experienced significant growth, particularly between 2020 and 2024. However, recent trends show a consolidation phase as foreign investments shift towards global opportunities, particularly in artificial intelligence. Factors such as a depreciating rupee and attractive returns from US government bonds have further pressured the Indian market.

During the discussions, NSE MD and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan indicated that while India lacks a standout AI investment theme, it could still benefit from the global AI trade's unwinding. Veteran investor Ramesh Damani emphasized that while the market may face volatility due to geopolitical tensions and the US midterm elections, he remains optimistic about India's long-term growth potential, noting that the market typically rises fivefold every decade.

The panelists highlighted the importance of earnings growth as a key driver for market performance. S. Naren, CIO of ICICI Prudential AMC, pointed out that while valuations have corrected, they are not yet at attractive levels. He suggested that investors consider sectors like financial services, insurance, FMCG, and IT for potential opportunities amid the current correction.

In his keynote address, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey stressed the need for deeper capital markets in India, advocating for easier access for companies to raise funds. He mentioned that around 2,000 companies could be ready for listing, and emphasized the importance of simplifying regulations to enhance investor confidence. The discussions at Ignite reinforced a long-term optimistic outlook for the Indian market, contingent on earnings growth and improved investor sentiment.
