Meta Platforms has reached an agreement to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims from nearly every US state regarding the impact of Facebook and Instagram on youth mental health. This settlement, announced by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, comes after a landmark federal trial that began just days prior. The funds will be allocated to youth online safety programs across the states involved, with California receiving the largest share of $1.5 billion.
As part of the settlement, Meta will implement new design changes specifically for teen users in the US, including daily time limits and the removal of certain features that contribute to addiction. Although Meta did not admit any wrongdoing, the deal is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the safety of young users online. Additionally, the settlement could influence other social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar measures, as their compliance may affect Meta's financial obligations under the agreement.
