In a significant leadership change, UltraTech Cement has announced that K.C. Jhanwar will assume the role of non-executive vice chairman starting January 1, 2027. This transition follows the decision of K.K. Maheshwari to step down from his position as non-executive vice chairman and director, effective the same date. The board approved these changes during a meeting held on October 19, 2023.
K.K. Maheshwari's resignation is attributed to his ongoing commitments and personal obligations. Jhanwar, who has been serving as managing director since January 2020, will conclude his term just before the transition. His extensive experience in the cement industry, which began in 1981 with the Aditya Birla Group, includes leadership roles in finance, operations, and management, making him a well-suited candidate for the new position.
In his farewell communication to the board, Maheshwari reflected on his time with UltraTech as a rewarding experience, highlighting the strategic initiatives and value creation achieved during his tenure. He expressed gratitude to the chairman and fellow directors for their support throughout his career at the company.
This leadership change comes at a crucial time for UltraTech Cement as it strives to strengthen its market position in India. The company has recently completed the integration of the India Cements and Kesoram Cement brands into its flagship UltraTech identity, which has reportedly led to a 21.3% year-on-year growth in brand recognition without losing market share. The consolidation of brands is part of a broader strategy to enhance consumer trust and support premium pricing in a competitive market.
Looking ahead, UltraTech aims to leverage its extensive distribution network, which includes approximately 76 manufacturing facilities and nearly 2,000 warehouses, to further solidify its market presence. By unifying acquired brands under the UltraTech name, the company seeks to enhance its competitive edge and streamline operations as it continues to expand across India.
