Jio Platforms Targets $3.2 Billion in Upcoming IPO
Jio Platforms, part of Reliance Industries, aims for a record $3.2 billion IPO, marking a significant milestone in India's financial landscape.
Jio sets a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share for its IPO.
The IPO is scheduled to open on October 21 and close on October 23, 2024.
Proceeds will primarily be used to reduce debt at Reliance Jio Infocomm.
Jio Platforms, the digital subsidiary of Reliance Industries led by Mukesh Ambani, is preparing to launch an initial public offering (IPO) aiming to raise up to $3.2 billion. This IPO is poised to become the largest in India's history, reflecting the strong interest from public investors in a company that has already attracted over $20 billion from global giants like Google and Meta in previous funding rounds.
The company announced the IPO details in a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, revealing a price band set between ₹1,065 and ₹1,119 (approximately $11.19 to $11.76) per share. The offering will include up to 270 million new shares, with the subscription period commencing on October 21 and concluding on October 23. Notably, anchor investors will have the opportunity to bid starting October 19, 2024.
At the upper limit of the proposed price range, Jio’s valuation could reach around ₹10.3 trillion (about $108.3 billion), a significant increase from its previous valuation of ₹4.91 trillion in 2020. This growth trajectory is underscored by Jio's impressive subscriber base, which has surpassed 524 million, making it the largest telecom operator in India. The company initially gained market share through free data offerings and competitive pricing, although its rates have since aligned with industry standards.
The implications of Jio's IPO extend beyond its financial metrics; it is expected to surpass Hyundai Motor India's previous record IPO of ₹278.7 billion ($3.3 billion) in 2024. As Jio diversifies its services into broadband, cloud computing, and digital solutions, the IPO is seen as a pivotal moment for both the company and the Indian market. Furthermore, the timing of the IPO coincides with ongoing tensions between Ambani and Elon Musk, who has publicly criticized Ambani regarding the rollout of Starlink in India.
Looking ahead, Jio plans to allocate a substantial portion of the IPO proceeds—up to ₹275 billion ($2.9 billion)—to reduce debt at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining funds will be directed towards general corporate purposes. As the IPO date approaches, the market will be closely watching how investors respond to this significant offering and what it means for the future of Jio and the Indian telecom sector.
