On October 15, Akash Ambani revealed that Jio Platforms has filed a total of 7,220 patent applications, making it the only Indian firm to rank among the top 20 applicants in the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty. This announcement came during a press conference following the company's submission of its Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO).
Ambani highlighted that the patent applications, filed both domestically and internationally as of June 30, 2026, reflect Jio's commitment to technological innovation. The company boasts a robust team of over 12,000 engineers dedicated to developing proprietary technology, which has enabled Jio to create its own technology stack, reducing reliance on external providers.
In discussing Jio's growth strategy, Ambani pointed out key areas for expansion, including mobility, home broadband, enterprise services, and international markets. He emphasized that Jio currently handles approximately 60% of India's data traffic, underscoring the scale of its operations in the domestic telecom sector. Furthermore, he noted that Jio has achieved the largest 5G subscriber base globally, outside of China, since launching the technology just three years ago.
Ambani also shared insights on data consumption trends among Jio users, revealing that the average monthly data usage has surged to 43.7 GB per customer. He mentioned a significant drop in data prices, which have plummeted from Rs 228 per GB to Rs 7.5 per GB as of FY26, making data more accessible to consumers.
As Jio Platforms prepares for its public market debut, the company has set a price band for its IPO between Rs 1,065 and Rs 1,119 per share. The public offering is scheduled to open on October 21 and will close on October 23, with plans to issue up to 27 crore equity shares, potentially raising Rs 30,213 crore at the upper end of the price range.
