Jio Platforms is setting its sights on expanding its broadband services to reach 100 million homes by 2025, as announced by managing director Akash Ambani on October 15. This ambitious goal is part of a broader strategy to tap into a $56 billion market for enterprise digital services in India, which Jio believes will drive its growth beyond mobile connectivity.
The company, which celebrated a decade of operations on September 6, has already established a substantial customer base of 530 million. Ambani highlighted that Jio's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) have exceeded Rs 76,000 crore over the past ten years, with a notable 17.8% growth in EBITDA over the last three years. Jio's focus on home broadband is seen as a crucial growth engine, with plans to expand its service availability across 19,000 pin codes.
Ambani noted that approximately 40% of Jio's new broadband customers are coming from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, which reflects the company's strategy to reach underserved markets. Jio currently accounts for about 67.5% of net fixed broadband additions in India. The company's approach involves integrating broadband with television and digital applications, rather than offering internet access as a standalone service, which has resulted in significant daily consumption among users.
To facilitate this expansion, Jio has developed proprietary technology that operates in the unlicensed Wi-Fi spectrum, allowing for download and upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps. A next-generation version promises even higher speeds. This technology is already in use by 6.5 million customers, contributing to 40% of Jio's new home broadband additions. The company aims to overcome challenges related to fiber installation by leveraging this innovative technology.
Looking ahead, Jio sees potential for adding around 314 million subscribers in the mobility sector, including 100 million first-time SIM users. In the enterprise segment, Jio aims to capture a larger share of the digital services market, which includes sectors such as banking and hospitality. The company is also exploring international partnerships to monetize its technology stack, positioning itself as a managed-services partner in global markets. With a focus on customer value and profitability, Jio is poised for significant growth in the coming years.
