Jefferies Projects 50% Upside for Sagility Amid IT Sector Recovery
Jefferies identifies selective opportunities in IT stocks, forecasting significant re-rating potential for Sagility and established players like Infosys and TCS.
Sagility shows over 50% re-rating potential, while Infosys and TCS exceed 20%.
The Nifty IT index has surged approximately 14% in October, driven by price-to-earnings adjustments.
Jefferies maintains a cautious outlook on large-cap IT stocks, suggesting limited upside beyond certain earnings multiples.
Jefferies has highlighted potential opportunities within the IT sector, suggesting that stocks like Sagility, Infosys, and TCS could see significant re-ratings despite a generally subdued growth forecast for the industry. The brokerage estimates that Sagility could achieve a re-rating of more than 50% in an ideal scenario, while both Infosys and TCS are projected to exceed a 20% re-rating potential.
This analysis follows a notable recovery in IT stocks during October, with the Nifty IT index appreciating by around 14%. Individual stocks have also experienced gains of up to 20%. Jefferies attributes this rally primarily to price-to-earnings re-ratings rather than improvements in revenue or earnings forecasts. Investor sentiment has been buoyed by the resilience of IT companies, which have continued to report growth despite challenging macroeconomic conditions and concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on technology spending.
Jefferies has revised its target prices for Infosys and TCS, increasing them to Rs 1,160 from Rs 1,020 and Rs 2,125 from Rs 1,800, respectively. The brokerage has maintained a 'Hold' rating on Infosys while assigning an 'Underperform' rating to TCS. It notes that both companies are currently valued for modest revenue growth of only 1%-3% in constant currency terms over the next decade, suggesting room for upward re-rating if growth expectations stabilize.
Among mid-cap technology firms, Jefferies identifies Sagility as having the most promising re-rating potential. The company's current valuation reflects growth expectations that are significantly below its historical performance. The brokerage also indicates that Sagility's risk of downside appears lower compared to its mid-cap counterparts. Currently, large-cap IT stocks are priced for organic revenue growth of 0%-9%, while mid-cap firms are expected to achieve growth rates between 6%-14%.
Looking ahead, Jefferies warns that the valuation opportunity for large-cap IT stocks may diminish if growth expectations do not improve significantly. In a favorable scenario, large-cap companies could trade at earnings multiples of 15-22 times, while mid-cap firms might command higher multiples. The immediate focus for the sector will be on maintaining growth expectations without further declines, as even a lack of negative surprises could facilitate a re-rating for select IT stocks.
