Fuel charges for domestic flights now range from Rs 375 to Rs 1,300 based on distance.

The hike is attributed to rising aviation turbine fuel costs amid geopolitical tensions.

IndiGo, India's leading airline, has announced an increase in fuel charges for all flights, effective from 12:01 AM on October 6. This adjustment affects both domestic and international routes, reflecting the rising costs of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which have surged recently due to various geopolitical factors.

The revised fuel charges for domestic flights will depend on the distance traveled. Passengers can expect to pay between Rs 375 for flights up to 500 km and Rs 1,300 for those exceeding 2,000 km. For international flights, the charges will range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the specific route.

IndiGo has cited a significant increase in ATF prices, which rose by over 14% month-on-month, marking some of the highest levels seen in the past decade. The airline emphasized that ATF constitutes a major portion of operational costs, and this rise is anticipated to affect the overall cost structure and network economics of airlines, including IndiGo itself.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has contributed to the volatility in oil markets, impacting fuel prices globally. Although current oil prices remain below the peak of $126 per barrel observed earlier in the conflict, the sustained increase in ATF costs has compelled IndiGo to adjust its fuel charges accordingly.

This fuel charge hike follows a previous increase in September, where IndiGo raised fees for various ancillary services, including infant travel and excess baggage. The charge for traveling with an infant on domestic flights has increased from Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,000, while charges for unaccompanied minors now stand at Rs 5,999 domestically and Rs 12,999 internationally. As the airline navigates these rising costs, passengers are advised to check IndiGo's website for the latest fee structures and updates.
