Indian Stocks Face Major Corrections: RVNL Drops 69.6% from Peak
Retail investor favorites in India, including RVNL and Suzlon, have seen significant declines from their all-time highs amid broader market sell-offs.
RVNL has plummeted 69.6% from its peak, making it the worst performer among major stocks.
Many stocks are trading at discounts of 40-70% compared to their previous highs.
The correction reflects vulnerabilities in investor sentiment due to geopolitical tensions and economic factors.
Recent data reveals that several of India's retail stock favorites, including public sector undertakings and renewable energy firms, have experienced significant price corrections. Stocks such as Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL), and Suzlon Energy, which previously attracted strong retail interest, are now trading well below their all-time highs. This downturn follows a broader sell-off in Indian equities, with the Nifty 50 index recently breaking an eight-week losing streak on October 9, 2026, although investor sentiment remains fragile due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and high crude oil prices.
The extent of the decline varies significantly among these stocks. For instance, RVNL has seen a staggering drop of 69.6% from its peak of Rs 626 in July 2024, now trading at Rs 190. Similarly, IRFC has decreased by 65.4%, from Rs 217 to Rs 75, while IRCTC has lost 57.9% from its peak of Rs 1,092 to Rs 460. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has also faced a correction of 43.6%, falling from Rs 3,552 to Rs 2,003. In contrast, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has shown relative resilience, with a smaller decline of 16% from its peak.
Among turnaround stocks, Suzlon Energy has fallen 55.4% from its peak of Rs 83 in September 2024 to Rs 37, reflecting the volatility in the renewable energy sector. Yes Bank and Vodafone Idea have also seen declines of 35.5% and 27.8%, respectively. These fluctuations highlight the risks associated with investing in turnaround stories without considering financial fundamentals and market conditions.
The correction has also impacted stocks linked to India's capital market growth. Central Depository Services (India) Ltd. (CDSL) has dropped 35.3% from its peak, while BSE has seen a decline of 21.7%. This suggests that even companies benefitting from rising retail participation are not immune to market corrections.
Overall, the widespread decline serves as a cautionary reminder for investors. A strong investment theme does not guarantee sustained share-price gains. Investors must evaluate earnings visibility, balance-sheet strength, and valuations before considering whether current prices present a buying opportunity.
