Indian Stock Market Faces Volatility as Sensex Drops 548 Points
On October 13, 2026, the Indian stock market is expected to open positively despite recent declines in major indices.
Sensex fell by 548 points, closing at 71,924.68 due to rising crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows.
Nifty 50 also declined by 157.10 points, indicating a cautious market outlook.
Asian markets showed mixed performance, with South Korea's Kospi index dropping over 4%.
The Indian stock market is anticipated to begin on a positive note on October 13, 2026, as indicated by GIFT Nifty's performance. This comes despite a significant drop in the Sensex, which fell by 548 points on October 12, closing at 71,924.68. The decline was attributed to various factors, including rising crude oil prices and ongoing foreign fund outflows, which have created a cautious atmosphere among investors.
The backdrop of this volatility includes a surge in crude oil prices, with WTI crude trading between $92 and $93 per barrel, and Brent crude surpassing $105. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that these elevated prices, along with inflation concerns and geopolitical tensions, are weighing heavily on market sentiment. The Sensex experienced a tumultuous session, dropping as much as 796.23 points at one point, reflecting the market's instability.
In terms of specific market movements, the Nifty 50 index closed at 22,363.35, down 157.10 points. Despite a strong opening, profit booking quickly set in, leading to a decline throughout the session. Nandish Shah from HDFC Securities highlighted that the Nifty initially opened higher but could not maintain its gains, ultimately closing near its lows. GIFT Nifty, however, indicated a potential positive start for Indian indices, trading around 22,423, up 41 points from the previous close.
The implications of these market movements are significant for investors in India. With the Sensex's outlook remaining sideways, analysts suggest that the 71,300 to 71,500 range is critical for stability. Sachin Gupta from Choice Equity Broking emphasized the need for the index to hold this zone to avoid further declines. Conversely, Rupak De from LKP Securities noted that the Nifty's recent performance suggests a potential bearish trend, with immediate support at 22,300 and resistance at 22,420 and 22,650.
Looking ahead, investors will be closely monitoring upcoming economic data, including inflation figures and quarterly results from major banks, which could influence market direction. As global markets remain mixed, with Wall Street closing on a subdued note, the Indian stock market's trajectory will depend heavily on both domestic and international economic indicators.
