The Indian stock market is anticipated to commence trading on a cautious note today, October 13, as investors grapple with rising inflation concerns and geopolitical tensions that are impacting market sentiment. The trends on the Gift Nifty indicate a slightly positive opening for the benchmark indices, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex expected to respond to these global cues.
In the previous trading session, both the Sensex and Nifty 50 experienced a decline, with the Sensex dropping by 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to close at 71,924.68. Similarly, the Nifty 50 fell by 157.10 points, or 0.70%, finishing at 22,363.35. Market analysts, including Ajit Mishra from Religare Broking, suggest that the current volatility and weak buying conviction warrant a cautious approach, advocating for a hedged strategy until the indices demonstrate sustained strength above critical resistance levels.
Several factors are contributing to the cautious outlook for the Indian stock market. Asian markets opened lower today, following losses on Wall Street, with Japan's Nikkei 225 down by 2.26% and South Korea's Kospi declining by 4.33%. The technology sector in Asia has particularly suffered, mirroring the selloff seen in U.S. tech stocks, which has raised concerns among investors.
Additionally, India's retail inflation rate surged to 5.54% in September, marking its highest level since October 2024. This increase from 4.83% in August has heightened concerns about consumer spending and economic stability. In contrast, crude oil prices have seen a slight decline after a recent spike, with Brent crude futures dropping to $106.10 per barrel.
Looking ahead, market participants will be closely monitoring upcoming economic data and earnings reports, which could provide further insights into market trends. The cautious sentiment is expected to persist until clearer signals of stability emerge from both domestic and international markets.
