The unemployment rate in India remained stable at 5% for September 2026, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO). This figure is consistent with the rate reported in August 2026, reflecting a steady labor market amidst ongoing economic conditions.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation highlighted that the rural unemployment rate (UR) saw a minor decline to 4.2%, down from 4.1% in August. Conversely, the urban unemployment rate experienced a slight increase, rising from 6.8% in August to 6.9% in September. Among female workers, the overall unemployment rate rose to 5.2%, up from 5.1% in the previous month. The rural female unemployment rate was reported at 3.9%, marking the lowest level for 2026, while urban female unemployment increased from 8.9% to 9.2%. The NSO's Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) serves as the primary source for assessing labor market conditions, with data collected from over 370,000 individuals across the country.

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 and above remained at 55.5% in September, slightly down from 55.6% in August. Rural LFPR was recorded at 58%, while urban LFPR saw a modest rise to 50.7%. Compared to the previous year, the overall LFPR increased by 0.2 percentage points, indicating a gradual recovery in labor market engagement.

Looking ahead, the stability in unemployment rates suggests a cautious optimism for the Indian economy. The government will continue to monitor these trends closely, with further surveys planned to assess the ongoing impact of economic policies and labor market dynamics in the coming months.
