India's retail inflation rate climbed to 5.54% in September 2026, marking the highest level recorded this year, according to provisional data from the National Statistics Office (NSO). This increase is attributed primarily to rising food prices, which have significantly impacted household expenses. The inflation rate for August was reported at 4.83%, highlighting a notable upward trend.
This inflation surge follows a recent decision by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to increase the benchmark lending rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% in an effort to control inflation. This marks the first instance of the headline inflation rate surpassing the 5% threshold in the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) series. The data indicates that food inflation rose sharply to 7.74% in September, up from 5.97% in August, with food and beverages experiencing a 7.36% inflation rate.
Specific food items have seen dramatic price increases, with onions leading the way at an inflation rate of 108.09%, a significant jump from 48.78% in August. Other notable increases include garlic at 54.62% and lemons at 36.41%. Additionally, sectors such as transport, personal care, and miscellaneous goods contributed to the overall inflation rise. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation reported that rural inflation was higher than urban inflation, with rates of 6.08% and 4.88%, respectively.
The government data from August indicated that rural inflation was at 5.24% and urban inflation at 4.31%. Analysts suggest that the current CPI inflation aligns with expectations due to persistent increases in food and energy prices. Garima Kapoor from Elara Capital anticipates further rate hikes from the RBI in the current financial year, while Nirav Karkera from W by Groww notes that inflation may stabilize towards the year's end, contingent on various economic factors.
At the state level, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest inflation rate among states with populations exceeding 5 million, at 6.81%, followed closely by Odisha at 6.70% and Madhya Pradesh at 6.68%. As inflation continues to rise, the RBI's monetary policy will be closely monitored for further adjustments in response to economic conditions.
