In a recent address at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Shaktikanta Das, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, announced that India's economy is on the verge of achieving an 8% growth rate. This optimistic outlook is attributed to a combination of reforms including the Goods and Services Tax (GST), banking reforms, and a commitment to flexible inflation targeting, which have collectively bolstered economic stability.
Das emphasized that the reforms implemented over the past decade were not merely temporary measures but strategic initiatives designed to strengthen the economy's resilience against disruptions. The Indian economy recorded a growth rate of 7.8% in the June quarter, following a 7.9% growth in the previous financial year. This growth is largely driven by robust domestic demand and increased investment, showcasing the effectiveness of the reforms.
The former governor of the Reserve Bank of India noted that the financial sector's prudent management, along with a resilient external sector, has become a cornerstone of India's economic expansion. He highlighted that indicators of the external sector remain strong, supported by diverse exports, free trade agreements, and a consistent surplus in services trade, along with steady remittances from abroad.
Das outlined several reforms undertaken by the government, stating that the focus moving forward will be on leveraging emerging opportunities. He projected that the pace of economic activity would accelerate over the next five years, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), which he believes will enhance productivity, improve public services, and transform various sectors including healthcare and education.
In addition, Das called for the development of the corporate bond market and urged for innovative financing solutions in municipal finance and infrastructure. These steps are seen as essential for sustaining growth and capitalizing on the potential of India's evolving economic landscape.
