In a significant regulatory move, the Indian government announced on Monday a revision to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, permitting the operation of flex-fuel vehicles that can utilize up to 100% ethanol blended petrol. This decision comes just months before several car manufacturers are slated to introduce their E100 models into the market.

The amendments specifically update the emission regulations to include E100 alongside the previously recognized E85. Officials clarified that both E85 and E100 fuels are designated solely for vehicles that are specially designed and certified for their use. Consequently, vehicles that operate on E20 or conventional petrol will not be able to utilize E85 or E100 fuels. Importantly, this notification does not mandate existing vehicle owners to switch to E85 or make any modifications to their vehicles now or in the future.

Flex-fuel technology, which enables vehicles to run on various ethanol and petrol blends from a single fuel tank, is already in use in countries like Brazil and the United States. Depending on the vehicle's design and certification, this technology can accommodate fuel blends ranging from E20 to E100, with E100 being predominantly composed of ethanol.

The government highlighted that ethanol has a lower fossil carbon footprint compared to traditional petrol. By promoting the use of higher ethanol blends, the initiative aims to decrease tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide and certain hydrocarbons. Additionally, increasing the use of ethanol is expected to lessen India's reliance on imported crude oil, contributing to energy security.

Looking ahead, the approval of E100 vehicles is anticipated to stimulate the automotive market, with several manufacturers preparing to launch their models in the near future. This regulatory change marks a pivotal step towards enhancing sustainable transportation options in India, aligning with global trends in reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources.
