Employees plan a strike in early November to protest the government's divestment strategy.

On October 23, Arunish Chawla, the secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), reassured IDBI Bank employees that their service conditions and pension commitments would remain unchanged following the bank's acquisition by Fairfax Financial Holdings. This announcement comes amidst growing concerns among staff regarding the implications of the ownership transition, which involves a significant sale of over 60% stake valued at ₹52,878 crore.

Chawla emphasized that under the share purchase agreement, the strategic buyer is prohibited from altering employees' service conditions to their detriment. This statement aims to alleviate fears among IDBI employees who have expressed their opposition to the government's divestment plan, with plans for a strike across branches in early November supported by the United Forum of Bank Unions.

Addressing specific concerns regarding retirement benefits, Chawla confirmed that a dedicated pension fund has been allocated to ensure that existing commitments to pensioners are honored. He clarified that IDBI Bank is not a nationalized entity, and thus, the terms of employment are determined by the bank's board in consultation with employees, rather than being dictated by the Union government.

Chawla reiterated that IDBI would continue to function as a board-managed institution after the acquisition, adhering to the same legal and operational frameworks currently in place. The restructuring of IDBI as a going concern indicates that the fundamental operational structure of the bank will remain intact despite the change in ownership.

As the government progresses with the strategic sale, the assurances from DIPAM are intended to clarify the protections available to current employees and pensioners. While the ownership structure will shift, the government maintains that existing service conditions will not be modified to the disadvantage of employees, and pension obligations will continue to be fulfilled.
