IDBI Bank Sale to Fairfax Marks ₹52,878 Crore Milestone
The Indian government approves a historic sale of IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial Holdings, signaling a major shift in the financial sector.
Fairfax Financial Holdings acquires a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for ₹52,878 crore.
Government and LIC stakes in IDBI Bank will reduce to 15% and 19%, respectively.
IDBI Bank has improved its financial health significantly since privatization.
On October 14, 2026, the Union Cabinet sanctioned a significant restructuring of IDBI Bank, allowing Fairfax Financial Holdings to purchase a controlling stake for ₹52,878 crore. This transaction is noted as the largest foreign direct investment in India's financial sector to date. Following this deal, the government's ownership in IDBI Bank will decrease to 15%, while the Life Insurance Corporation's stake will drop to 19%. Previously, the government held a 45.5% stake, and LIC owned 49.2%.
IDBI Bank has faced financial challenges for several years, leading to its classification under the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework in 2017. In January 2019, LIC acquired a controlling interest by investing ₹21,624 crore, which resulted in the government's stake falling below 51%, prompting the Reserve Bank of India to categorize IDBI as a private bank. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has now approved the sale of 60.72% of the bank's equity, with the government selling 30.48% and LIC 30.24%, leaving them with reduced stakes.
The winning bid of ₹81 per share was secured by Fairfax, which was one of two final bidders. Officials from the Ministry of Finance clarified that this restructuring will not alter the regulatory framework governing the bank or its customer services. The Reserve Bank of India will maintain full regulatory oversight, ensuring that depositors and borrowers remain unaffected by the changes.
Deposits in IDBI Bank continue to be insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor, and the bank is obligated to meet the 40% Priority Sector Lending target applicable to all private commercial banks. IDBI Bank will also persist in providing essential financial services, including various government schemes aimed at financial inclusion and social security.
Since its transition to a private bank, IDBI has shown remarkable improvement in its financial performance. The gross non-performing asset ratio has plummeted from 31.8% in September 2018 to just 2.3% by March 2026. Additionally, the bank's capital adequacy ratio has surged from 6.22% in 2018 to an impressive 26.65% in March 2026, culminating in a record net profit of ₹9,513 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26.
