The agreement marks the first 5G licensing collaboration between Huawei and Qualcomm.
Qualcomm will acquire several US patents from Huawei, enhancing its technology portfolio.
Huawei's patent licensing agreements are projected to exceed $6.9 billion following this deal.
Huawei and Qualcomm have entered into a groundbreaking multi-year cross-licensing agreement that encompasses advancements in 5G, artificial intelligence, and networking technologies. This marks the inaugural licensing collaboration specifically for 5G between the two tech giants, highlighting their commitment to innovation in mobile communications.
Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm is set to purchase a number of US patents from Huawei, which cover various technological developments in computing, AI, and networking. However, this deal is contingent upon regulatory approval, particularly given Huawei's ongoing trade restrictions imposed by the United States since 2019. The outcome of this agreement will depend on the stance of the US Commerce Department regarding Huawei's operations.
Although the joint press release from both companies did not disclose a monetary value for the agreement, reports from Reuters suggest that the total value of Huawei's patent licensing agreements will surpass $6.9 billion once this deal is finalized. This development comes as Huawei has been compelled to invest heavily in research and development to create its own chipsets and technologies, previously sourced from companies like Qualcomm, leading to increased R&D expenditures.
Alan Fan, Huawei's Chief Intellectual Property Officer, emphasized the significance of Huawei's long-term investment in research and development, which has propelled innovation in mobile communications. He noted that Huawei's contributions to 4G and 5G standards, including advanced signal transmission technologies, have solidified its leadership in the mobile communications sector. The agreement not only underscores the value of Huawei's innovations but also acknowledges Qualcomm's essential role in modern communication technologies.
John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, highlighted Qualcomm's substantial investments in foundational wireless technologies that have paved the way for mobile innovation. He stated that this agreement reaffirms Qualcomm's leadership in 5G technology and recognizes Huawei's ongoing contributions to innovation and intellectual property in the technology landscape. Looking ahead, both companies are poised to leverage this partnership to drive further advancements in 5G and AI technologies.
