HDFC Bank's net profit rose 5.55% year-on-year to ₹20,700 crore.
Anup Bagchi will assume the role of Managing Director and CEO on October 27.
Kaizad Bharucha, the Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, has announced his resignation from the bank, effective December 31, 2023. This decision was disclosed in a filing to the stock exchange on Saturday, marking a significant change in leadership at India's largest private sector bank.
Bharucha has been with HDFC Bank since 1995 and his request for resignation has been accepted by the bank's board, which will now seek approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). His departure comes shortly before Anup Bagchi, a seasoned executive from the ICICI Group, is set to take over as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on October 27, 2023. Bharucha was reportedly a candidate for the CEO position, making his resignation particularly noteworthy.
The timing of Bharucha's resignation coincides with HDFC Bank's recent financial performance report, which indicates a 5.55% increase in consolidated net profit for the July-September quarter, amounting to ₹20,700 crore compared to ₹19,611 crore in the same period last year. The standalone net profit also saw a rise of 4.7%, reaching ₹19,510 crore. Additionally, the bank's total income increased to ₹97,258 crore, up from ₹91,040 crore a year earlier.
HDFC Bank's financial health appears robust, with provisions and contingencies rising slightly to ₹3,573.62 crore from ₹3,500 crore in the previous year. The bank reported a 12.6% year-on-year growth in profit after tax, excluding treasury performance. Furthermore, the asset quality improved, as evidenced by a decrease in the gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio to 1.11% as of September 30, down from 1.17% in the previous quarter and 1.24% a year earlier.
Looking ahead, the bank's overall capital adequacy ratio stands at 18.9% at the end of September, a decrease from 20% a year ago. As HDFC Bank prepares for this leadership transition, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the implications for the bank's strategic direction and future performance under the new CEO, Anup Bagchi.
