Gold prices experienced a notable rise on Monday, reaching $4,200 per ounce in futures trading, as investors recalibrated their expectations regarding potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. This shift followed comments made by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, which appeared to suggest a pause in rate increases during the upcoming meeting. As of 00:51 ET, spot gold was up 0.4% to $4,180.29, while U.S. gold futures gained 0.5% to $4,200.92.
The previous week had seen gold prices decline by 0.7%, but Warsh's remarks led traders to lower the implied probability of a quarter-point rate hike to less than 20%. This change in sentiment comes after a stronger-than-expected inflation report had previously raised expectations for further tightening of monetary policy, which had bolstered the U.S. dollar. However, Warsh's comments interrupted this momentum, providing support for gold prices.
Despite the pressures of higher borrowing costs, which typically negatively impact gold due to its lack of interest yield, the metal has maintained a position above the critical $4,000 support level since August. Safe-haven demand has played a significant role in stabilizing prices after a significant drop earlier this year, triggered by geopolitical tensions, particularly the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Analysts from ANZ have indicated that concerns regarding fiscal sustainability are leading investors to view elevated yields less as a sign of economic growth and more as a reason to hold gold as a hedge. They noted that while short-term pressures from high yields and a strong dollar could lead to further selling, the long-term outlook for gold remains positive, with expectations of prices rising above $5,000 an ounce by 2027, contingent on continued investment and central bank demand.
Looking ahead, the market will closely monitor upcoming economic indicators and Federal Reserve meetings, as these will significantly influence gold prices. Investors are weighing the potential paths of U.S. interest rates and the dollar's strength, which will be crucial for determining future price movements in the gold market.
