The Federal Reserve maintained interest rates but hinted at potential policy changes.
Central bank purchases of gold remain strong, with 79 tonnes bought in August.
Gold prices experienced a decline on Thursday, reaching $4,038.49 per ounce after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged. This decision, while anticipated by the market, left investors uncertain about future monetary policy adjustments, particularly as they await new inflation data.
The Federal Open Market Committee's vote to maintain the benchmark interest rate at its current level was supported by a 10-2 majority. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh indicated that the central bank might reduce its annual policy meetings from eight to six starting next fall, which has raised questions about the Fed's future direction. Traders are particularly focused on the upcoming personal consumption expenditures price index data for September, which is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation.
In addition to gold, other precious metals also saw declines, with silver dropping 1.4% to $53.2295 an ounce and platinum falling to $1,520.17. The U.S. dollar index slightly increased to 102.20, which often inversely affects gold prices. The recent volatility in equity markets, particularly due to AI-related stock fluctuations, has led some investors to liquidate gold holdings to cover losses in other areas, contributing to gold's 2.5% drop in October.
Despite the recent downturn, central bank purchases are providing a longer-term support mechanism for gold prices. According to Goldman Sachs, central banks acquired 79 tonnes of gold in August, significantly higher than pre-2022 monthly averages, with China being a major contributor. This sustained demand from central banks is viewed as a potential stabilizing factor for gold prices in the future.
Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor inflation indicators and any signals from the Federal Reserve regarding interest rate adjustments. The market remains cautious, balancing the effects of central bank activity with broader economic conditions and geopolitical uncertainties that could influence gold's performance in the coming months.
