Renewed tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have raised oil prices, complicating inflation concerns.

In early U.S. trading on Friday, gold prices fell below $4,000, with spot gold trading at approximately $3,958.80 per ounce, down 1.32%. Silver also experienced a sharp decline, reaching $50.080 per ounce, a drop of 4.06%. This downturn follows renewed attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which have led to increased crude oil prices and heightened inflation concerns, despite indications of moderating wage growth in the U.S.

The recent U.S. employment cost index revealed a 0.8% increase in the third quarter, aligning with expectations but showing a slowdown from 0.9% in the previous quarter. While wages and salaries rose by 0.7%, the overall compensation costs increased by 3.4% year-on-year. These figures suggest that while labor-related inflation pressures may be easing, they remain above levels consistent with the Federal Reserve's inflation targets, complicating monetary policy decisions.

The economic backdrop includes a stronger-than-expected GDP growth of 3.4% in the third quarter, supported by robust consumer spending. However, the combination of rising inflation and economic growth has created challenges for the Federal Reserve, which is contemplating another interest rate hike in December. Futures markets currently predict an 83% chance of this increase, influenced by the latest wage data and inflation reports.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz worsened with a recent attack on a commercial tanker, raising concerns over the security of Middle Eastern energy supplies. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it underscores the ongoing risks to regional shipping. As crude oil prices surged, Brent futures approached $117.15 per barrel, reflecting fears of further military escalation in the region, especially with the U.S. midterm elections approaching.

Looking ahead, the outlook for gold and silver remains uncertain. The persistent geopolitical tensions may support defensive demand for gold; however, the inflationary impact of rising oil prices could lead the Federal Reserve to maintain a restrictive monetary policy for an extended period. Silver's decline, exacerbated by concerns over industrial demand and high energy costs, leaves it vulnerable to further selling pressure as market conditions evolve.
